Sligo Walking Tours (Formerly Melcoo Sligo Tours) offer social history and literary-themed walking tours. Explore Sligo’s dark history on the Dark Tales walking tour revealing the town’s turbulent past with stories of the undead, executions, jail-breaks, disease and other grim tales.

Sligo Walking Tours is run by Mel Ni Mhaolanfaidh, a Historian and Tour Guide who researches and creates unique walking tours in Sligo in the North-West of Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way.

She graduated with a Diploma in Heritage and Folklore in 2019 at St Angela’s College, a campus of the National University College, Galway. In 2022, she graduated with a Masters in Historical and Heritage Studies of the North West, in which she researched the subject of policing in Sligo in the nineteenth century for her dissertation.

Mel has a passion for Irish history, specialising in local history, dark history, literary tourism and social history.

Mel has been writing about Irish history and heritage since 2014 on the now retired blog and also created a Sligo Secret Scripture app on the Guidigo platform. The Sligo Secret Scripture tour can also be booked for private or group tours. Mel began giving tours of the Secret Scripture trail during Heritage Week 2016 and launched this website and the Sligo Dark Tales tour in April 2018. She has five years’ experience in tour guiding.
